In Reality in Advertising (Reeves 1961, pp. 46–48) Reeves laments that the U.S.P. is widely misunderstood and gives a precise definition in three parts:
- Each advertisement must make a proposition to the consumer. Not just words, not just product puffery, not just show-window advertising. Each advertisement must say to each reader: “Buy this product, and you will get this specific benefit.”
- The proposition must be one that the competition either cannot, or does not, offer. It must be unique—either a uniqueness of the brand or a claim not otherwise made in that particular field of advertising.
- The proposition must be so strong that it can move the mass millions, i.e., pull over new customers to your product.

I will take you through a process of determining your company USP. You have to adopt this position as the message that your company reflects in all facets, and your company has to execute the position before, during and after transactions.
This message must be reflected in verbal, visual, and written communications. Every opportunity that the company has to interact with an individual must be leveraged to stand out from the competition. Doing this process may require re-creating your marketing pieces.

This comes to the question… What do your clients, past and present, your unsold leads, and the general public say about your company? When someone thinks of your business, what comes to mind? Do you have great warranty service? Do you have rude customer support? If you don’t know, you must find out. Ask your competitors, ask your vendors, ask your clients, you might find that they think of you differently than you think of yourself.
If your brand is weak or badly-lit, we have some work to do in rebuilding it to reflect your true greatness. In the process of recreating your image, your logo may need to be redesigned, and again, further communication pieces. You may notice this type of thing happening all the time around you, companies young and old, big and small do this to re-establish their brand in the marketplace. Your company is no different.
